Episode Sixty-Nine: Nimisha Mukerji

Nimisha Mukerji is an award-winning producer and director for film and television whose work has been featured on National Geographic, VICE and OWN. Her debut feature 65_RedRoses was one of the first official selections by Oprah Winfrey for her Documentary Club. It told the story of Eva Markvoort’s journey from Cystic Fibrosis warrior to double-lung transplant recipient and, ultimately, to chronic rejection and her death in 2010 at 25 years old.

Nimisha’s other features include Blood Relative, a poignant film about thalassemia patients in India that screened in Vancouver, New York and Paris, and Tempest Storm, an at once entertaining and deeply moving documentary about an octogenarian burlesque performer in Nevada who has done a helluva lot of living in her journeys around the sun. Nimisha is also directing episodic television, mostly in the family and romantic comedy realms. She’s won awards and grants and opportunities from big name organizations like Women in Film and Television Vancouver, Crazy8s, Telefilm, TIFF, and Bravofact, and is one of the participants in Women in the Director’s Chair’s Story Lab, developing the dramatic series Reign of Durga.

In this special episode of the YVR Screen Scene Podcast, Nimisha talks about working with icons like Ali Sweeney, Oprah Winfrey, Zach Lipovsky, and Eva Markvoort – and what it takes to be a documentary and narrative director in a world that demands you stick to one thing. Episode sponsor: DGC BC
